This is possibly the saddest thing I have ever written for Saiunkoku.
the Death of the Heart
"Shuurei--"
"Yes, Your Majesty?"
She had spoken without thinking, and the words hung in the air between them. The heavy silence startled her into looking up, to see the graven lines of his face deepen and set, his back straighten stiffly, and his eyes go remote and piercingly intense as he assumed the mantle of the Emperor.
"It was nothing, Prime Minister Kou," he said, "let us continue."
He never spoke her name again.
