He reached out with elegant ivory fingers and brushed the painted face. His expression was blank, his eyes shadowed. "Did you ever think about it, back then?"

Nghia shifted to glance at him. "What?"

"When you were alive. When you thought you loved me. Did you ever think about it?" His hand dropped. "That you would grow daily older, and fade, and eventually sicken and die . . . while I lived on, unchanging, forever the same as the first day you met me?"

The god was silent for a moment. "No," he said. "No. I never thought about it."

"No. You wouldn't have." The Dragon Lord turned away from the portrait and left the room.

They watched the mist rise from the valley below together, stealing steadily closer to the house through the jeweled green of the trees.

"Did you love him?" Nghia asked, finally.

Emrys did not stir, his face expressionless and composed. "Dragon Lords cannot love."

"Did you love him?"

The Dragon Lord's eyes remained on the tendrils of soft fog reaching through the branches. "I did not wish to," he said, in a low voice.
